Northern Sardinia: Pevero - Costa Smeralda

Pevero Golf Club

Pevero
Architect: R. Trent jones Snr. (1972).
18 holes: 6,170m: par 72.
The oldest and probably best known of Sardinia's courses, Pevero plays around the Cala di Volpe bay in the heart of the glitzy Costa Smeralda.
The course itself forms a gently sloping loop that offers lovely views from the higher ground.  It is a fair and very enjoyable test of golf, where the hazards (and strategy) are clear.  A golfing environment preened by the well heeled Members; it's a joy to spend a day at Pevero - and you may well enjoy the Clubhouse as much as the course!

Cervo Hotel*****

The heart of the Costa Smeralda is the pleasure port of Porto Cervo.  This is where the millionaires and billionaires that frequent these waters choose to spend their time (and money) on their luxury yachts, some of which are more akin to cross-channel ferries in terms of size!

What better place to observe the comings and goings of the rich and famous than the Hotel Cervo, embedded in the centre of the harbour - in fact it seems the harbour was built around it.

In keeping with its location, the five star Sheraton Cervo Hotel has been constructed to the highest standards from local materials and so fits seamlessly into its setting.  The bedrooms and suites feature such creature comforts as whirlpool baths and Sweet Sleeper beds and have been decorated in delicate pastel tones.  The hotel also has an indoor and two outdoor pools, plus a shuttle service to its private beach.  Naturally there is also a beauty spa with sauna, steam room and a full range of treatments.

When it comes to dining you are spoilt for choice within the hotel alone!  The Terazzo Cervo, Il Pescatore, La Pergola and Il Pomodoro will all fight for your appetite.  Outside there are many other restaurants within walking distance too.

Piccolo Golf Hotel***

In stark contrast to the glitz and glamour of the Costa Smeralda, the Piccolo Golf Hotel is a shy and retiring, family owned and run, hotel. From the front door to the harbour at Porto Cervo is only five minutes - but it may as well be a world away.

The hotel offers simple, tidy rooms that are pretty compact. However it does have a quiet garden and nice pool for relaxing and absorbing some Sardinian sunshine. It is also very close to the Pevero golf course and to several beautiful beaches.

Breakfast at the Piccolo Golf is served in a conservatory style building in the garden that makes the most of its cool and quiet position. There is no restaurant, however on the road leading to Porto Cervo there are several good options and more in Porto Cervo and around.

Drinks are served by the very welcoming family and staff either by the pool or in the reception.

The hotel has built its business on service and has a very regular clientele - it's easy to understand why.

Nibaru Hotel****

On the same road as the Piccolo Golf, the Nibaru Hotel is a slightly more luxurious establishment with more (and larger) rooms.

The bedrooms are arranged around the central pool area and there is a restaurant too that is very good value for the region.

Another Course to Consider:

Sperone (Corsica)
Architects: J. Fazio & B. Dassú (1974).
18 holes: 5,904m: par 72.
Pretty clifftop course on the southern tip of Corsica - reachable by ferry in an hour.  We also know a few hotels in nearby Bonifaccio if you would like to stay a few nights?
