Golf in Portugal: sunny fairways, blue horizons
The Southwestern outpost of Europe (next
stop North Africa) enjoys a very temperate climate – ideal
for year round golf. You may possibly encounter a few rainy hours
in December and January but even so the temperature rarely drops
out of the 60’s. Surprisingly, despite the arid meteorology
there is plenty of water to be found below ground and the golf courses
are verdant playgrounds accessible to all. We are pleased to offer
two contrasting destinations in this attractive land: The Algarve
and Estoril.

The Algarve:
Draught sunshine

The Algarve has without doubt one of the densest
concentrations of high quality golf courses in Europe. Verging on
a golfing theme park, the dozen courses that encircle Vilamoura
seem to exist purely as life support systems for itinerant golfers.
For a taste of the old Portugal you could stay in downtown Faro
or for an afternoon’s snapshot try a trip inland to Loulé
or a little further on up the scenic mountain roads to Alte –
perpetual winner of the “most-Portugese-town” title!
The whole area is extremely well organised for golfers seeking to
maximise their time “on-course”, most hotels have dedicated
personnel to assist with golfing problems and in Vilamoura there
is even a shuttle bus that will take you to and from the hotels
to the four Vilamoura courses and Vila Sol. |

Estoril & Sintra:
Feel the real Portugal
Estoril and Sintra has a much more “local”
feel. Here there is more to life than just golf (yes it’s
true!) and you will find less overt tourism, more local flavour
and many more Portuguese Members playing.
The Portuguese have a strong seafaring tradition,
which is reflected in their cuisine. Straightforward grilled fish
of all species takes pride of place on many a menu, alongside seafood
and hearty fish-stews, all just perfect with a setting sun and a
glass of crisp Vinho Verde.
