The best hotels in Alabama for playing the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Playing the Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama

We would recommend flying directly to Atlanta in neighbouring Georgia from where you can hit the trail in under two hours by car. Even if you spend one night in Atlanta on arrival, you can still be on the first Tee by mid-morning at either Silver Lakes or Grand National: all very easy.

Alternatively there are connecting flights into Birmingham or Montgomery.

The loop of the trail we would recommend to begin with is Silver Lakes (27 holes), Oxmoor Valley & Ross Bridge (54 holes and Renaissance hotel), Capitol Hill (54 holes and Marriott hotel), Grand National (54 holes and Marriott Hotel). Plenty of golf for ten days or a fortnight’s stay! However if you are looking to play and stay beside the sea then head way down South to Mobile and the Magnolia Grove Resort on the Gulf of Mexico.

Birmingham hotels (Oxmoor Valley & Ross Bridge)

Renaissance Ross Bridge*****

The Ross Bridge hotel, apparently styled after a Scottish Castle, is more a self-contained resort right on the course of the same name.

There are over two-hundred luxurious bedrooms, with balconies overlooking the course and everything you could wish for in true Marriott Renaissance style.

There is a large outdoor pool, whirlpool and sundeck, plus an indoor pool and extensive spa area (various treatments and massages are available) along with a well-equipped gymnasium.

Refreshments are available at various bars around the property and there is a choice of restaurants too.  For dining out and other outside entertainment, the concierge will gladly arrange transport for you to the nearby Galleria where some of the best Birmingham restaurants are to be found.

Redmont Hotel - Birmingham The Redmont Hotel***

For a more traditional base we would recommend the old style Redmont Hotel in the centre of the old Jazz district of downtown Birmingham (Hank Williams’ loved the place).

From here you can investigate all that this, surprisingly compact town has to offer. For dining out there are a few good options around the hotel and a couple of late bars too. Or ask the concierge to run you over to Lakeview (the trendy quarter) for seafood on the deck and some fashionable night-spots, or down to Fivepoints for huge racks of ribs, fried green tomatoes and other southern specialities.

Montgomery Hotels (Capitol Hill)

Marriott Capitol Hill****

Marriott Capitol Hill****

Perfectly placed alongside the Senator course at Capitol Hill, just outside Prattville, the Marriott hotel provides ultra handy access to the three courses. Being a smaller hotel by US standards (just ninety bedrooms and two cottages for groups of six to eight) the atmosphere is quite intimate and you will find the staff extra friendly and attentive. The restaurant and bar have a wooden deck overlooking the course where you can sip a sundowner, relax over breakfast or dine in style. There is also an outdoor pool and whirlpool.

N.B. For groups of six to eighty there are two self-contained cottages beside the hotel, ideal for longer stays as you can self-cater; please ask us for details.

Venturing out, old town Prattville retains a deep southerly charm, just a couple of streets of single storey buildings and a disused mill that have played a most influential role in Alabama’s cotton trade. There is a very good restaurant in town MarChelles, which doubles as an excellent coffee shop by day.

A few miles away Montgomery was once the capital of the Confederate forces (from whence comes the epithet “Capitol Hill”) and there is plenty of history associated with the town. For dining out there is a little area south of Montgomery known as “Old Cloverdale” where you will find a concentration of high quality restaurants.

Opelika-Auburn Hotels (Grand National)

Auburn Marriott Opelika****

Auburn Marriott Opelika****

Another fine example of an extremely comfortable hotel with all the right amenities in exactly the right spot!

On the Grand National golf complex (just a short drive from the Clubhouse) the hotel has just over one hundred rooms most of which overlook the golf courses and lake Saugahatchee.

Outside there is a heated pool with whirlpool and inside you will find the Lakeview restaurant open for lunch and dinner, plus the Sports bar open every evening for faster food and snacks or just an ice-cold beer and some boiled peanuts to mull over the day’s round.

Nearby Opelika is a quaint old southern town well worthy of a stroll: Auburn is a livelier place with its large university and shopping centres. There are plenty of good restaurants in both towns and the staff at the hotel will be only too happy to help with recommendations, reservations and transport too!
