Our selected golf hotels: Phoenix - Scottsdale - Arizona
The twin metropoli that are Phoenix and Scottsdale
merge seemingly seamlessly into each other, surrounded by desert, in the middle of
nowhere. Initially a little daunting, one quickly finds ones bearings thanks
to the American grid system and its logical numbering of roads, so navigation is quite easy.
The new parts of town are based on the American assumption that everyone drives everywhere, so amenities are fairly well spread out; however, there are many resort hotels where it's not really even necessary
to leave the premises during your stay! Having spent some time investigating all the options; we feel that there
are two outstanding parts of town and would recommend staying in either
Kierland or Scottsdale Old Town, depending on your preferred pace of holiday.
Kierland CommonsThe Westin Kierland Resort and Spa sits just across the street from the Kierland Commons Mall area - a superb open air shopping, dining and supping village. This means that you can walk from your hotel to a huge range of shops, cafés, bars and all sorts of restaurants (plus a few late night establishments) all with the ease and convenience of being able to stroll back to your hotel whenever you like: all very civilised. |

Old Town ScottsdaleOld Town Scottsdale is cowboy
country. Great fun if you are looking for somewhere with a more
relaxed atmosphere and a much younger, more bohemian crowd.
The shops are single storey, selling Indian handicrafts, cowboy hats, desert souvenirs and the like; the
town's dinky museum retells much of the short history of the region. |
The Westin Kierland*****
Like a ship in the desert, the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa seems in many ways like an elegant cruise liner moored in the middle of the Arizona desert - complete with its own 27 hole golf complex in tow! There are 735 rooms in the hotel, plus 63 suites and 32 apartment style "Casita" rooms - all of which feature Westin's unique "Heavenly Beds"; most rooms also have a private balcony or terrace. The number of people staying at the Westin Kierland is never a problem as the organisation and service is so good. The array of facilities is also impressive - 8 separate bars and restaurants - all with their own styles; coffee and ice-cream parlours; huge water-park complete with several pools including a flowing riverway and water slide. For intense relaxation there is the fully equipped Agave Spa with saunas and various sports massages, beauty therapists and other treatments. The golf complex has 27 outstanding holes, a huge Clubhouse and golf academy. Buggies are compulsory here (air conditioned ones are available) plus there are the unique individual Segways that are ridden standing-up; there is a full training course on these before you are let loose! |

Hyatt Summerfield Suites In the middle of Old Town Scottsdale the Hyatt Summerfield Suites offer well appointed, well priced accommodation just a short stroll from the main drag and all the evening action. The Old Town is quite lively in the evening (aided by it's proximity to Arizona University no doubt) but the Summerfield Suites are suitablt distanced to ensure a peaceful sleep. Condominium style suites surround a central reception and pool. There is a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning; in the evening there are numerous restaurants a short walk away and plenty of other options too if you are prepared to drive a mile or so. The Summerfield Suites offer spacious one or two bedroomed suites, they all have a living area with settee, TV and VCR, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. One-bedroomed suites give you plenty of privacy - plus space to spread out and relax. In addition to the separate bedroom with its own bath, walk-in wardrobe and TV, the suite also has a dedicated work/living space including a full-size desk, dual-line phone, voice mail and high-speed Internet access. For even more space the two-bedroom suite is the perfect solution. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, wardrobe, TV, phone and private voice mailbox. The shared living area is equipped with a settee, TV and VCR and a fully-equipped kitchen. Catering for yourself is made easy with a grocery delivery service; you could even rustle-up your own barbecue (unlike the UK, the sunshine is pretty reliable in the Sonoran Desert!).
