GOLF HOLIDAYS IN GHENT & OUDENAARDE
Where to play and stay in Belgian Flanders.

Golf holidays in Ghent & Oudenaarde

If you find Brugge a little busy for your liking, then carry on a few kilometres further to Ghent, which is equally charming and may be a more relaxing alternative.  A similar sized town, riddled with waterways, littered with bars and cafés, dotted with expansive squares: just less 'discovered' than Brugge but bursting with all the same attractions.  As well as all that, there are four golf courses within half-an-hour of your city-centre hotel: perfect for combining all the Belgian delights of the pretty town of Ghent with the greenery of four fine golf courses.

Alternatively, just south of Ghent, Oudenaarde is a much smaller town than Ghent (and even closer to the 36-hole Golf Club at Royal Oudenaarde).  The town centres around one big square with the stunning town hall on one side, the imposing St. Bavo's cathedral alongside and St. Niklaus church across the way (there is also St. Jakob's if you are feeling under-churched in any way).

Oudenaarde town square

Pressed up around Oudenaarde's main square are plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants, serving all the famous Belgian delicacies: mussels, chips, waffles and ridiculously strong beers!  There are also a few very nice small, boutiquey, hotels interspersed between the hostelries: ultra convenient for golf holidays in Belgium.

Ghent & Oudenaarde golf courses

The Belgian Vlamse region has four very good golf courses spread over three very welcoming Golf Clubs.  The pride of the pack is undoubtedly Royal Latem: a wonderfully traditional Golf Club with a hundred year old woodland course - a true gem of a place.

Just outside Ghent lurks another royal club - Royal Oudenaarde.  Here there are two truly excellent courses on level, thickly wooded terrain around the fabulous old castle (Kasteel) that nowadays serves as its sumptuous Clubhouse.  The two courses are quite different in style, so it is well worth playing both of them.

The fourth course in the area is at Waregem: more of a commercial-style Golf Club aimed at getting the locals into the game (and a few other sports).  Don't let this deter you from playing here as the course is well designed, kept in great condition and offers a contrasting combination of a big and broad front-nine with an intricate back-nine: so plenty for all to enjoy!

Getting to Ghent & Oudenaarde

By far the easiest route from the UK is Le Shuttle (Eurotunnel) or Dover-Calais ferries as Ghent and its golf courses are only about two hours from Calais; perfect for a quick break and a refreshing change of scenery if you live in the Southeast of England.

Alternatively coming from further north, the Hull-Zeebrugge ferry cruises overnight and will drop you in Zeebrugge, close to the First Tee of all three clubs in the Ghent - Oudenaarde region.
