Golf Holidays - Dorset

On the South Coast of England in the quiet county of Dorset, there is a small goldmine of golf.  You may have heard Peter Alliss extolling the virtues of his boyhood Club Ferndown from time-to-time on the BBC, well there are quite a few others too in quite a wide, but sensible, price range.

The South coast of England has always been popular for British holidays; the sandy beaches at Bournemouth and Sandbanks are eternally popular for family Summer holidays so there is a well established tourist infrastructure.  Add to this a goodly selection of golf courses and you have an ideal golfbreak destination within easy reach of anyone living in the southern half of the UK.

Dorset Golf Clubs

There is plenty of choice of golf around Poole and Bournemouth, ranging from exclusive private clubs to relaxed pay-n-play courses.  The three premier Golf Clubs are Parkstone, Broadstone and Ferndown: any of which you would be deligted to be a member of!  Brokenhurst Manor could also be included in the First Division, but as it's a little outside Dorset in the depths of the New Forest most golfers regard it as a stop en-route to the delights of Dorset.

The next tier of courses offer exceptional value for your golfbreak and are composed of the naturally reserved Isle of Purbeck with its panoramic views of Studland Bay, Knighton Heath tucked away on the outskirts of Poole and Wareham a small Club with two very distinct nines.  Coursess such as Dudsbury and Canford Magna fit into this category too.

For the ultimate in cheery golf there is also the public course at Meyrick Park, which is well maintained, has some very good holes but a lot of dog-walkers too as it occupies commonland.

Dorset golf holidays - where to stay?

The choice of location for your Dorset golf trip is quite clear-cut: the bright lights of Bournemouth or the smaller seafaring town of Poole.  Bothh are close to the best of the golf courses and both have plenty to offer the wayfaring golfer.

Bournemouth is a big town with a long sandy beach, a pier (of course) and all the fun of the fair along the Great British esplanade.  There are many hotels to choose from as well as Guesthousess and simple B&s.  Likewise when it comes to dining out or a few post-match refreshments there is a multitude of pubs and restaurants to choose between.  So if you are looking for lively apres-golf then Bournemouth is probably the spot for you.

Poole seafront

Poole, on the other hand, is a smaller town with a long seafaring history where its quayside forms the hub of all the action. It's a lot quieter than Bournemouth with a more refined feel to the streets, cafés, pubs and restaurants; one could almost add genteel if it were not for the odd lively weekend over the Summer months!  From the quay you can take any number of boat trips, the most popular of these is the one to Brownsea Island - a nature reserve just offshore - for some birdwatching or red squirrel spotting.

Getting to Dorset

If you are based anywhere in the Southeast of the UK then there are no real obstacles to getting to Poole or Bournemouth easily (unless you have to negotiate London and the M25!).  If you can negotiate that without too much trouble, then the Kent coast is not far at all.
