Vilamoura marina

Golf holidays in Vilamoura

Looking for a streamlined golf destination where pretty much everything is laid on for you?  Then Vilamoura and the surrounding golflands of Vila Sol, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are your answer.  Vilamoura is a 1980s purpose-built marina designed purely for tourism on the sunny Algarve coast of southern Portugal.  The front row around the harbour is occupied purely by bars and restaurants, the next layer is a string of large hotels and outside that are the six Vilamoura Golf Clubs.  Everything is connected by the free shuttle buses in perpetual circulation.
Life for a golfer in Vilamoura is all very easy.

Vilamoura - golf courses

You would be hard pressed to find a greater concentration of golf courses than Vilamoura and the surrounding enclaves of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo.  Between them they host a dozen superb courses (and a few easier ones too for those embarking on their overseas golfing career).

The timeless classic is the Old Course at Vilamoura: pure Portugal under the canopy of parasol pines.

Vilamoura Old GC

There is also the new Vilamoura flagship course - the Victoria.  Built with the Portuguese Open in mind (hence the five-star hotel alongside) it's a good test and visually stunning.

Vilamoura Victoria GC

The next best courses at Vilamoura are Pinhal (a baby version of the Old) and Millennium (a change of scene with tall pines and water).  The fifth course - Laguna, is also the cheapest (and the wettest as the name implies!).

Vilamoura Millennium GC

One thing's for sure, you will not be short of golfing choice wherever you stay around Vilamoura!

Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo - golf courses

Close to Vilamoura but outside their stable, are five more courses that are the equal of golf anywhere in the world.  One of the very best (and most popular) is the beautiful San Lorenzo that runs along the Ria Formosa wetlands: a rare beauty.  Owned by the Dona Filipa hotel, it makes a great combination.

San Lorenzo GC

The two courses at Quinta do Lago (Royal and Ocean) and the two at Vale do Lobo (North and South) complete this handful of exceptional golf courses that should be on any golfers hit-list.

Quinta do Lago - South

There is plenty more golf around too and the best of the second-tier (and reasonably priced) courses lie between the 27-hole resort at Vila Sol, San Lorenzo's sister course at Pinheiros Altos and the stylish Laranjal through old orange groves.

Pinheiros Altos GC

Vilamoura - where to stay?

Vilamoura is a lively spot for golf holidays that has moved pleasantly up-market over the last decade.  It now has plenty of good quality restaurants around the marina (and one or two more inland) where you can while away a very enjoyable evening.  And with so many hotels, it's the logical place to stay.

Vilamoura waterfront cafés

Of the big hotels all around the marina, the Tivoli is one of our favourites.  However, there are some great accommodation and golf packages to be found if you stay in one of the Dom Pedro hotels - as they currently own the Vilamoura golf courses.  The Dom Pedro Golf Hotel is a bit of a Vilamoura institution; we favour their smaller Marina Hotel for a little added intimacy.

Dom Pedro Marina

Overlooking the beach is the Crowne Plaza hotel: totally rebuilt from the inside out in 2016 it's a very luxurious base with modern bedrooms and direct access to the beach.

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura

Lovers of San Lorenzo will always head for the Dona Filipa hotel in Quinta do Lago (a smaller seaside resort) with their heavily discounted Green-fees at the enchanting San Lorenzo Golf Club (and Pinheiros Altos too).

Dona Filipa Hotel

Another idea, if you wish to play the Vilamoura courses and enjoy a little Portuguese lifestyle, why not stay in Faro?  It's a proper little town filled with bars, boutiques and restaurants to stroll post-golf and only ten minutes from the majority of Golf Clubs - muito bom!

Vilamoura - around & about

For most visiting golfers the entertainment available on-tap around the marina is sufficient for après-golf relaxation: there are a lot of bright lights twinkling alongside the moored yachts.  More intrepid travellers will want to investigate further afield and a very good place to start is Faro.  More than just an airport, the town is riddled with the traditional Portuguese monochrome cobbled backstreets where you will find shops, bars, restaurants and cafés all at 'locals' prices.

Loule backstreets

Should you wish to head further back in time try a trip inland to Loulé,  a pretty little town with some colourful backstreets.  To dig deeper into Portugal take a trip up the scenic mountain roads to Alte – perpetual winner of the 'most-Portuguese-town-in-Portugal' title, so take your camera!

Quinta do Lago - O Praca

For beachside fun, Albufeira is pretty hectic!  We would lean towards the Quinta do Lago beach (in front of the Dona Filipa hotel) where there is an extensive area of decking and lounge-like outlets where you can drink or dine as your appetite prefers.

Getting to Vilamoura

Getting to your golf holiday in Vilamoura could hardly be any easier with so many flights to Faro - the gateway to the Algarve.  We can arrange flights for you if you wish or are equally happy to let you book these yourselves if you prefer? We can arrange a hire-car for the duration of your holiday, or we have a very reliable coach and minibus company that we use if you prefer to be chauffeured from golf course to golf course in and around Vilamoura.

Vilamoura beach

For getting around once you are in-situ there is the free shuttle service to avail of, that links all the Vilamoura courses and hotels.  However, if you have a party of more than a fourball, we would always recommend reserving private transfers for yourselves. It's almost free and adds a lot of convenience to your golfbreak for just a few extra €uro.

VILAMOURA GOLF COURSES
Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo golf course reviews.

Vilamoura Victoria Golf Course Vilamoura - Victoria  Architect: A. Palmer (2004)  18 holes: 6,505m: Par 72.

The latest addition to the Vilamoura golf resort and probably the toughest challenge of all (from the back Tees anyway).  Victoria differs from the majority of Vilamoura courses in that it is over more open country rather than confined in alleyways of parasol pines.  Indubitably, there are stretches where the trees are very much in play but there are also some open areas into most of which Mr. Palmer chose to slap a small lake! This makes the Victoria course a real examination of your game and explains why it is a regular stop on the European Tour. The Victoria Clubhouse offers golfers the full 'US style' service with running flunkies, range balls, buggies et cetera: it is also the most expensive Green-fee in the Vilamoura stable. There is a big hotel on site too the 'Anantara' should you wish to stay closer to the Bermuda grass of the Tee than the bright lights of the marina.

Vilamoura Old Golf Course Vilamoura - Old  Architect: F. Pennink.  18 holes: 6,254 m: Par 73.

The first course built at Vilamoura in 1969 and extensively upgraded in 1997. The overwhelming feature of the Old course at Vilamoura is the plentiful parasol pines. These line almost every one of the tight, twisting, testing Fairways and encircle the courses one-and-only water hazard too, so there is no escape! As it's the 'the original' its is always in demand, every golfer who visits Vilamoura should play the Old at least once. However the Greenkeepers do a remarkable job of maintaining the course to a very high standard despite the constant footfall. Pavilion style, timber-framed Clubhouse adds a nice touch of nostalgia to the home holes (and post match analysis).

Vilamoura Pinhal Golf Course Vilamoura - Pinhal  Architect: F. Pennink.  18 holes: 6,353m: Par 72.

Very similar in style to the 'Old' but one immediately senses a little more room between the pines on the generally broader, flatter fairways. The course extends over a large area of gently descending terrain between holiday villas that split the course into three sections. Water only comes into play on the two furthest holes. Pinhal is an attractive golf course, where you can relax a little more over your shots free from the fear of impending doom, with a large modern Clubhouse and range. Geographically, it lies behind the town and harbour beside the Hilton Hotel and spa.

Vilamoura Millennium Golf Course Vilamoura - Millennium  Architect: M. Hawtree.  18 holes: 6,157m: Par 72.

Sharing the same Clubhouse with the Laguna course, the Millennium seems to bridge the old and the new in Vilamoura. The opening and closing holes are in the traditional Algarvian mode meandering through towering pines, the middle section on the other hand, is much more open in style with water hazards replacing the wooden ones. A very popular golf course at Vilamoura due to the variety of holes and to the sensible pricepoint of its Green-Fee (one of the best value courses we think).

Vilamoura Laguna Golf CourseVilamoura - Laguna  Architect: J. Lee & R. Rocquemore. 18 holes: 6,111m: Par 72.

Intertwined with Vilamoura's Millennium course, the Laguna course contrasts markedly with all the other pine-lined courses of the Algarve. There are fewer trees around here, but it's not for the aquaphobic as there is water (very) present on eleven of the holes. Well there is a clue on the course's name! The Laguna course plays out in the broad sunlight, over hummocks and hollows; this is a thought-provoking layout, where placement of the ball off the Tee is a necessity to ensure a successful round. It does pass alongside the main road in places but that's unavoidable in such a busy holiday area.

San Lorenzo GCSan Lorenzo Architect: J. Lee.  18 holes: 6,238m: Par 72.

Aah, San Lorenzo; for many golfers the reason they return to the Algarve year after year. Without doubt one of the best golf courses in Portugal and one of the most exclusive on the Algarve too, realistically playable only by residents at the Dona Filipa hotel. The course begins in traditional Algarvian style under the spreading parasol pines. These soon give way to the visually stunning central and closing sections that run through the nature reserve of the Ria Formosa bordering the coast.  This also means that there is very little in the way of building around the course once you distance yourself from the Clubhouse with its attendant villas. San Lorenzo is one of those rare golfing combinations: a wonderful piece of land with a wonderfully designed course. The small, rustic Clubhouse has everything you need - apart from ostentation!

Vale do Lobo - Royal Golf CourseVale do Lobo – Royal Architect: H. Cotton. 18 holes: 6,059m: Par: 72.

To our mind one of the finest courses on Vilamaoura to Quinta do Lago strip and one of the most visually pleasing too. Everyone talks about the par-three 16th along the red cliffs of the beach, but the other seventeen holes are just as good and as appealing too. A very challenging course that travels around the Vale do Lobo estate betwixt fine houses and the odd hotel. Apart from the one cliff-top hole (which is truly spectacular) the Royal course is characterised more by wide Fairways, beautifully manicured, pine trees, dazzling white sands, gnarled fig trees, a splash of blue here and there and elevation changes that will test your club selection - as will the borrows on the usually rapid Greens. Bring your A-game.

Vale do Lobo - Ocean GC Vale do Lobo – Ocean  Architect: R. Rocquemore. 18 holes: 5,815m: Par 72.

The Ocean course at Vale do Lobo is very much a game of three thirds. Initially the course descends from the Clubhouse through the ubiquitous pines; it then moves over towards the Ocean and more open terrain and a couple of holes right alongside the water offering good views along the coast; finally it turns back uphill to the bright white Clubhouse through groves of ancient gnarled cork-oaks like gargoyles around an old church steeple. The course continually improves as you go and we think the closing holes are amongst the best with approaches into magnificent green placements amidst the tortured trunks.

Quinta do Lago - North GC Quinta do Lago – North  Architects: R. Rocquemore (1986) & P. McGinley (2014).  18 holes: 6,205m: Par 72.

Classic Algarvian golf as you pick your way through parasol pines, frilly bunkers filled with ice-white sand and past exotic looking villas  The recent total overhaul by Paul McGinley has dramatically changed the course, eliminating many of the dog-legs and blind shots into Greens: it is now a much fairer and more enjoyable course.  The first Tee is a little way from the Clubhouse and there are some walks from Green to Tee so a buggy is well worth considering.

Quinta do Lago - South GCQuinta do Lago – South Architect: W. Mitchell. 18 holes: 6,488m: Par 72.

Very similar to the North course in terms of terrain, however the holes are generally a little tighter and more testing as they follow the natural contours of the terrain. A thoroughly enjoyable course that builds steadily to a climax as the holes that will linger longest in the memory are the closing ones where you head down to the lower ground to criss-cross the lakes over some very testing holes, quite a finish we can assure you. One of the longer Vilamoura golf courses, so hope (pray?) that your driver is behaving.

Quinta do Lago - Laranjal GCQuinta do Lago – Laranjal  Architect: J. Santana da Silva. 18 holes: 6,061m: Par 72.

A recent addition to the Quinta do Lago selection of courses and a little way from the North and South Clubhouse.  Laranjal derives its name from the old orange grove that once stood on this land (some of it still does in fact!).  Rolling terrain, just about large enough for 18-holes, has been converted into a very attractive golf course with the removal of selected orange trees and the addition of white sand and blue water. Obstacles are plain to see, so no unpleasant surprises until perhaps you arrive at the fast, sloping Greens...

Pinheiros Altos GCPinheiros Altos  Architect: R. Fream. 18 holes: 6,057m: Par 71.

Owend by the Dona Filipa hotel who also own San Lorenzo, Pinheiros Altos is often a little overlooked by golfers dashing to the First Tee at the illustrious San Lorenzo Golf Club. Pinheiros Altos is more than worthy of a game or two as it has two very contrasting nines: the front nine is quite tight and demands a degree of control to safely negotiate the hills and dog-legs; the back nine is flatter and water comes into play – frequently. Beautifully incorporated into the course design, these water hazards are both aestetically pleasing and golfingly frustrating - just how they should be! The last two holes are particularly memorable.

Vila Sol GCVila Sol
Architect: D. Steel.
3 x 9 holes: 6,335m: Par 72.

Ostensibly level terrain with a few elevated Tees and Greens here and there, Vila Sol feels as if the landscape has naturally dictated the course with the architect adding a few finishing touches here and there rather than huge earth moving exercises.

Three loops of 9 holes, combined into three 18 holes courses each day, which adds to the variety.

Other courses to consider:-

East of Faro there are some very interesting golf developments at Monte Rei, Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima.
Heading further West, Penina and the other courses of the western Algarve are easily reachable for a day’s golf.

The Tivoli Marina dominates Vilamoura both physically and in terms of quality: a large hotel that has just about everything to make your holiday as comfortable as possible.  On one side is the marina, on the other a pool garden between the hotel and the Mediterranean, with direct access to the beach.

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****

Crowne Plaza Hotel - Vilamoura*****
Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****

The Crowne Plaza is one of Vilamoura's oldest newest hotels.  That might sound a little odd, but what happened in 2009 was the shell of one of the oldest hotels on the seafront was gutted and completely restructured internally to become one of the best hotels in Vilamoura: modern history.

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****

Styled in Moorishesque whites throughout the bright airiness of the entrance lobby, reception lounges and bar are a breath of fresh air on the Vilamoura scene.  The bedrooms are modern and delicately decorated with large marble encrusted bathrooms.  Deluxe bedrooms and Suites have glass partitions into the sleeping areas (with modesty screens).

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****

The gardens around the Crowne Plaza Vilamoura have a large swimming pool and plenty of space for a host of sun loungers on the bermuda-grassed lawns that lead down to the beach.

Crowne Plaza Vilamoura*****

When it comes to dining the restaurant on the ground floor is very good and it is only a very short stroll to the marina with its multitude of restaurants and nite-spots.  One of the most surprising features of the hotel is the large domed spa building that houses a good-sized indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, hammam and plenty of treatment rooms for massages and beauty treatments (should you feel you need them!).

In the centre of Vilamoura the Dom Pedro Marina is probably the smallest hotel on the quay and and as such has an almost family run feel to it.  It's certainly our favourite four-star hotel in Vilamoura.

Dom Pedro Marina Hotel****- Vilamoura

The standard rooms all have their own small balconies: in the Suites the balconies overlook the marina and are much larger with plenty of room to spread out inside and out under the wicker sunshades on their verandahs.  (Huge Presidential Suites are also available).

The garden bar and pool behind the hotel makes a fairly private spot for some post match therapy.  Later things gently enliven with occassional strolling musicians known to make an appearance.

The restaurant serves a delightful mix of Portuguese and Italian cuisine, while the marina is only yards away with a full range of other dining/drinking/dancing options.

Dona Filipa*****

Dona Filipa Hotel***** - Quinta do Lago
Dona Filipa Hotel***** - Quinta do Lago

The Dona Filipa hotel is part of the history of golf in Portugal.  Now owned by the JJW Hotels chain, who also own the San Lorenzo and Pinheiros Altos golf courses, this is the best place to stay in order to play golf at the fabulous San Lorenzo.  Although, in something of a geographic pun, the hotel borders the 15th hole of the Vale do Lobo Royal course.

Dona Filipa Hotel***** - Quinta do Lago

The bedrooms all have balconies and by retaining their original dark wood furnishings and polished tiled floors they have a classical feel.  In contrast, other areas of the hotel are decorated in lighter pastel shades bestowing an airy ambience.

The hotel's main restaurant opens out onto the compact sunny garden with its swimming pool, from here you can wander on down to the beach just a few hundred yards away. Upstairs there is a second, smaller, more gastronomic restaurant.

The Dona Filipa hotel also has seven very spacious modern suites available, but being so few in number they do need to be booked well in advance.

Quinta do Lago Hotel*****

At first sight a perplexing building, dazzlingly pink, close to the ocean on the South side of the Quinta do Lago resort area. Once inside the hotel the thought behind the design is evident as the crescent of balconies on the ocean side peer out across the Ria Formosa nature reserve to the hotel’s private beach beyond (complete with beach restaurant).

Quinta do Lago Hotel*****

Should you not wish to take the short stroll over to the beach, you will find the outdoor pool at Quinta do Lago on the first floor with plenty of space for sunbathing close to the poolside bar: there is also an indoor pool.

Quinta do Lago Hotel*****

The intimate gastronomic restaurant the “Ca d’Oro” is based primarily on Venetian cuisine: the larger, main restaurant has a more relaxed atmosphere and features regional dishes.

Standard bedrooms are very well sized, with balconies or patios on the ground floor, luxurious suites are also available (pictured).

Magnolia Hotel****

Magnolia Hotel - Quinta do Lago
Magnolia Hotel - Quinta do Lago

Within walking distance of 'Quinta do Lago Shopping', effectively the centre of the resort, lies the Magnolia Hotel.  Although everything seems brand new, the buildings have been here a while: you may remember its original incarnation as the Pinus Ria Motel?

Magnolia Hotel - Quinta do Lago

There are seventy bedrooms at the Magnolia (and seven pre-fab cottages) that have been totally made-over and bear no trace of their earlier existence!  Bathrooms are nice and modern too, making the Magnolia Hotel a very comfortable and practical place to stay close to the three Quinta do Lago golf courses.

Magnolia Hotel - Quinta do Lago

The Magnolia restaurant combines with its bar in a very bright and playfully decorated area close to the Reception - a very jovial setting for dinner or a drink.  Down at the 'Quinta do Lago Shopping' there are plenty more restaurants to choose from, all of which are in the modern style as there was nothing here prior to the 1980s!

Outside there is a good-sized pool with plenty of space to relax after your round and soak up some Algarvian sunshine or sip a refreshing cocktail from the pool bar.
