Golf Holidays - Cotswolds
The Cotswold Hills extend from Oxford in the East to Stroud in the West, covering a broad belt of glorious English countryside. For many, the sweeping views from the hilltops and quaint old market-towns are the very essence of Englishness. Folded in amongst all of this picture-postcard scenery are some thoroughly enjoyable golf courses - albeit not without a few inclines: well they're not called the Cotswold Hills for nothing!
One great advantage of the Conswolds is that the Golf Clubs are still undiscovered so Green-fees are very good value and the courses are generally quieter than you might find elsewhere. Accommodation can be in any of a hundred gastro-pubs (every village seems to have at least one!) where the standards of food and lodging are very high theses days: not to mention the standards of locally-brewed ales! All-in-all, it's a wonderful area to discover (or rediscover) ye olde Englandshire.
Cotswold Golf Clubs
Cotswold golf courses range from the sublime to the curious! In the first category, the two newer courses at Minchinhampton, the three at Frilford Heath and Burford all fit rather nicely and offer good-quality parkland golfing at established Golf Clubs: more on the curious below...
In amongst these are some smaller Clubs and commercial outfits that are worth considering too: the tiny Club at Kirtlington or the pay-and-play set-up at Wychwood with its very impressive course, for instance.
A lot depends on which side of the Cotswolds you choose to visit as to where you should play; basically it's a question of East (Oxfordshire) or West (Gloucestershire). Just let us know which side you're on and we can recommend the golf courses that will suit you best.
Cotswolds Curiosities
For golfers with a sense of intrigue and humour there is a trio of courses around Stroud that are sure to titillate every golfing nerve in your body: Minchinhampton Old, Cleeve Hill and Painswick All three are unusual yet enchanting and reveal what golf was like a Century or two ago. Minchinhampton Old is a great place to start the adventure across the Public land at Rodborough Common, alongside the local cattle; Cleeve Hill has an indescribable charm and some of the best views in Gloucestershire from it's elevated, treeless plain; Painswick is just extraordinary and needs to be played to be believed!
Cotswolds golf holidays - where to stay?
On the western side of the hills the clear favourite is the comfortable, tasty and well-run Bear at Rodborough. An old Coaching Inn that is perfectly placed on the Common just south of Stroud, close to the three Minchinhampton golf courses. Should you wish to stay in a town with more options for dining out and sampling local brews, we know several good hotels in both Stroud and Chippenham that will accommodate you in style.
On the other hand, staying over on the eastern side of the Cotswolds, we would recommend the charming village of Witney where both The Fleece and the Blue Boar offer delightful rooms, plus you can stroll around town of an evening investigating one or two other local hostelries...
Of course, should you wish to stay in the bigger town of
Oxford, we have some very nice hotel to suggest as an alternative.
